The King Follett Sermon

Ren Posts

From my Journal:

I was listening to some audio the other day and it talked about The King Follett Sermon so I looked it up on and Wow! What a profound profound document from Joseph Smith.

I can almost sense his frustration and he’s in a sense calling everyone on. I get the impression that he knows his time is short and that he’s trying to get everything out on the table so there’s not one rock un turned.

Its awesome!

He’s talking so confident about God and his relationship and some might say it’s irreverent and not humble but I say it’s not. Joseph Smith is talking with such confidence knowing that God is backing him up with his words.

I feel like this is how God wants us to be sometimes when we talk with him and claim our blessings.

I think the key is confidence with God not with ourselves and there’s a fine line there but I’m feeling more and more that God wants us to be more bold in coming to him kind of like Ammon in the Book of Mormon when Aaron was trying to rebuke him because he thought he was being puffed up but it was the exact opposite.

He was puffed up in God. He knew that God was backing him up.

Same with the Laminates that were known for being zealous more so than the Nephites. Anyway this document has had a profound impact in my life.

Some of my notes from it:

The King Follett Sermon was given April 2, 1844 just two months before Joseph was shot to death.

If men do not comprehend the character of God, they do not comprehend themselves.

The scriptures inform us that

“this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3.)

God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! That is the great secret.

It is the first principle of the gospel to know for a certainty the character of God, and to know that we may converse with Him as one man converses with another, and that He was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ Himself did; and I will show it from the Bible.

Having a knowledge of God, we begin to know how to approach Him, and how to ask so as to receive an answer.

When we understand the character of God, and know how to come to Him, he begins to unfold the heavens to us, and to tell us all about it. When we are ready to come to him, he is ready to come to us.

All the Best to you and your family!
